Plant Based Treaty

Eat plants, plant trees — put food systems at the heart of climate action.

The Plant Based Treaty is a global grassroots campaign urging national governments to put food systems at the heart of combating the climate crisis, through the promotion of plant-based options. It's modelled on the Fossil Fuel Treaty.

Who they are

The idea

A global treaty with three core demands — Redirect, Relinquish and Restore — and 40 suggested proposals covering food systems, land use, deforestation, ocean restoration and reforestation.

Bottom-up pressure

Endorsements from individuals, groups, businesses and cities create bottom-up pressure for national governments to negotiate a global Plant Based Treaty.

Local action

City campaigns, the 100 Cafes Campaign and community organising bring the treaty to life at street level.

What they do

  • Demand 1 — Redirect

Promote plant-based foods and actively transition away from animal-based food systems.

  • Demand 2 — Relinquish

Stop the problem growing: no land-use change, including deforestation, for animal agriculture.

  • Demand 3 — Restore

Heal the problem: restore key ecosystems, reforest the earth and build climate resilience.

  • 100 Cafes Campaign

Make 100 cafes near you more plant-based.

How you can help

  • Endorse the treaty as an individual, group or business
  • Join or start a city campaign
  • Volunteer or donate to support the movement
